"The Poetry Of Ahmad Shamlu"
is the subject of a lecture by Dr. Firoozeh Papan-Matin, Director of
Persian and Iranian Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle.
Attendance is free and open to all.
Ahmad
Shamlu (1925-2000) is one of the most celebrated figures of
contemporary Iranian literature. He was a poet, writer, journalist and
dissident, both under the
regime of the Shah and under the rule of the Islamic Republic.
Shamlu's poetic humanist vision accords with both
Western Modernist concepts and the modern transformation of classical
Persian poetry. His translation of the poetry of Langston Hughes and
Federico Garcia Lorca, among others, was also a testament to his
internationalism.
Dr. Papan-Matin, who has recently published a
book entitled The Love Poems of Shamlu ( Ibex, 2005), will
address important and original aspects of his poetry and his relevance
for today.
